Leinster - River Shannon
River Shannon
Co. Offaly
The River Shannon is the longest river in Ireland. It rises in the mountains of West Cavan and flow south for 160 miles to the tide at Limerick. The total catchment for the River and its tributaries is approximately 6,060 square mlies. for the most part, this is a big sluggish river which connects the great three loughs Allen, Ree and Derg. The Shannon is a mixed fishery and holds a wide range of coarse fish and pike as well as trout and salmon. Indeed, the fishing for the latter species is quite limited on the main channel and much better stocks are found in the tributaries.
There are three main areas where game anglers might concentrate their efforts on the main channel; the Upper Shannon, Meelick, and the Shannon at Limerick, including the Castleconnell Fishery.
Upper Shannon:
The first stretch extends for a distance of about 6 miles from Belantra Bridge (the Bailey Bridge) at Lough Allen to just below Battle Bridge near Leitrim village and the fishing is free. The Stretch holds fair stocks of brown trout to 2 lb and occassionally much bigger trout - to 9lb - are taken on spinners. Fly hatches include olives, sedges, blackgnats and some mayfly above Battle Bridge. It is a stretch that is not heavily fished for trout. Roach have spread to this part of the river in recent years and a bit of coarse fishing takes places. The trout fishing water is: for a mile below Galley Bridge where access is fair; a short stretch above Wooden Bridge where access is very difficult; midway between Wooden Bridge and Battle Bridge where access is fair; this being a developed coarse fishing stretch.
Meelick:
The salmon fishery at Meelick on the Shannon is situated approx 5 miles downstream of the bridge at Banagher. The river here is very wide, with several islands. In the channel between the islands, the water is relatively shallow and streamy with some nice salmon fishing stretches. Permission is from Electricity Supply Board Office, Birr, Co. Offaly. Castleconnell Fishery :
There are eight beats on the fishery. Five of these are let by tender every season and the remaining three are let on day tickets.
This famous and prestigious salmon fishery lies close by the ancient village of Castleconnell, 7 miles north west of limerick City and is owned and managed by the E.S.B.
