Munster - Lough Derg

Lough Derg
Co. Galway

Lough DergLough Derg is the largest lake on the Shannon, stretching for 22 miles from Portumna in the north to Killaloe in the south. It is a great mixed fshery, with salmon, trout, pollan and coarse fish. Public accces is good.
Historically this has been one of the great trout fisheries, though the fishing was mainly concentrated on mayfly time. The fishing has dropped off considerably in recent times, particularly in the northern half of the lough. Water clarity has deteriorated nad there has been a rise in algal growth.

The first hatch of mayfly generally occurs at Luska, which is fairly shallow, and the trout are smaller than average but plentiful. Dromineer Bay is a popular fishing area but catches seem to have dropped off in recent times.

The fishing is equally as good across by the the Scilly island, Aughinish Point, the Lusagh Rocks and the middla ground - a shallow area to the east of Holy island. This is a favourite area, even for wet fly fishing. The flooded area between Killaloe and O'Briens Bridge is dangerous for boats, with a lot of under water hazards, but holds a good stock of trout.
