Connacht - Lough Ree
Lough Ree
Co. Westmeath
Lough Ree is the second of the great lakes on the Shannon and stretches for 16 miles from Lanesborough in the north to Athlone in the south. It is 7 miles wide at it widest point, but the average width of the northern is 2 miles and the southern half averages 4 miles.
Lough ree is a mixed wild fishery with a good stock of trout. Incidentally, it is the only lough in the country where draft netting for trout still continues. This practice doesn't appear to affect the trout lakes to any great extent. There are many who clain the lough is completly under fished
At mayfly time -from mid May- the fish move into shallower water along the shores and around the numerous islands and shallows. Anglers on Lough Ree all have their favourite places in mayfly time. some consider that the area around the black islands, southwards to the Inchturk and on to Inchmore, gives the best fishing.
The large expanse of the water known as the Inner Lakes- Coosan Lough and Killinure lough - is course water and trout anglers should not waste any time there. on the west shore there are excellent fishing grounds form yew point, Bally Bay to the Cribby islands and all the way northwards along that shore to Galey Bay.
The mayfly season is the time to go for the Lough Ree trout. The average weight must near 2lb and fish up to 16lb have been taken by trolling. Trout from 5- 7lb are frequently taken by the dap and there are many stories of every season of big trout lost. Where the conditions are right, the trout will take a Green Drake imatation and there are many anglers who go there just for the thrills and excitement of of the spent-gnat fishing. Ree is also famous for its sedge hatches. the sedge fishing is very localized and the same is true of buzzer fishing.
