Connacht - River Erriff
River Erriff
Co. Mayo
The Erriff is a big spate river with many tributaries draining bare and rocky country. Its banks are mostly open, but here are a few sheltered places in the lower reaches. The river, which flows over the Aasleagh Falls and enters Killary Harbour near Leenane, is a good salmon river and also has heavy runs of sea trout.
The fishing is divided into eight beats, on five of which only fly fishing is allowed. On the other three, any legal method may be used. Beats are marked and are easily accessible from the Leenane-Westport road. Tawnyard Lake is at the head of the Erriff and is also a salmon fishery.
