Leinster - River Dodder

River Dodder
Co. Dublin

The Dodder is quite a remarkable river, in that it flows through the city of Dublin and is well worth fishing for both brown trout and sea trout. The Dodder rises in the Dublin mountains above Bohernabreena. Near it's source, it flows over granite and sandstone and holds very good stocks of small trout. Between Old Bawn and Tallaght, where it flows over Limestone, there is a noticeable change, the trout averaging 8 oz with some over 1lb. In all, there is about 7 miles of good fishing from Firhouse to Ballsbridge. At the weir pools, larger fish are regularly caught.

The river has good hatches of olives and midges, but it has few Sedges or other large flies. Hook sizes 18 or 20 are most effective.

There is occasional sea trout fishing from July to September. From the estuary to the bus garage at Donnybrook can be good.

The Dodder Angling Club have taken a special interest in the river. Membership of the club is open to all and is available at the Kiosk on Orwell Bridge and in the main fishing stores ( Southside Angling and Rory's - see TACKLE section ).
