Lough Ennell lies two miles below Mullingar. The season runs from 1st March to 12th October. There is also a six trout bag limit and 30cm size limit. Ennel produces some of the finest brown trout in Ireland.
Lough Ennell holds the record for Ireland's largest brown trout at 26lb 2oz. This fish was taken along the Belvedere shore by William Mears in 1894. The average size of the trout today is 1 and three-quater pounds, but can vary greatly from season to season. In March and early April the best fishing is in Kirlcooley bay, from Burrow Hill to hump Island, the Robinstown shore and betweeen Blin Island and River Point. The Duck fly hatches reach peak between 18th and the 25th April.The olive hatch comes in May and last for three weeks. Chiromonid hatch about the 20th of May and continie until mid June.
