River Nore - Tuesday, 13 August 2002
By all accounts, there has been an improvement in the salmon fishing on the river judging by the reports for June that I have received from the Southern Regional Fisheries Board. In the week ending 17th June, eight salmon were caught by anglers fishing at Brownsbarn, Thomastown Co. Killkenny. This water is controlled by the Kilkenny Anglers Association. In Thomastown waters upstream of Brownsbarn, a couple of salmon were reported to have been caught.
At the end of the week ending 23rd June comes the news that fishing for salmon has improved with many of the fish weighing between 11 and 14 lb. Brownsbarn and Thomastown waters report very good fishing with mainly salmon being caught and only a few grilse reported. At Bennetsbridge upstream of Thomastown, local anglers have been catching mainly grilse with only a few salmon caught. At Ballyreddin near Bennettsbridge, some large salmon were lost according to a very reliable source. However, they were not too disappointed as they are delighted to see such fine fish in the system and it lifts the spirit at a time when salmon are under such pressure.
Great fishing was reported in the last month of June from Brownsbarn, Thomastown, and Benettsbridge waters, a mixture of salmon and grilse being caught. At Mount Juliet Fishery, nine salmon were caught last week, three at 15 lb, four at 10 lb and two at 9 lb. Some grilse were also caught. All were caught by visiting anglers. Meanwhile, in the Kilkenny City area, a reasonable number of grilse have been caught. Likewise in the Freshwater area.
