River Shannon - Wednesday, 8 August 2001
Salmon fishing was lively on the Lower Shannon in the week ending 24th June. However, a notable feature are the numbers of very small grilse from 1.5 lb to 4 lb being reported caught. A total of 37 fish were reported from Castleconnell Salmon Fishery for the week. Paul Maloney, Birr had 4 fish on Saturday, June 24th . Jason Chung had two fish on June 19th. Martin Keily had an 11 lb salmon and a beautiful fresh run 6.5 lb grilse with sea lice on Sunday. Nick Nickelson had four fish on Beat 8 on Monday, June 18th. Matt Reilly had two fish on Beat 4. By all accounts, the Shannon at Plassey is providing excellent salmon fishing but best results are in the early mornings and evenings. A run of grilse arrived on the mid Shannon in the Meelick area on Tuesday, June 28th. A number of local anglers reported catching fish. There was a total of 31 fish reported from Castleconnell Salmon Fishery for the week to July 2nd. Best day was Monday, June 25th with 12 fish reported for the day. Mandy Keegan and party had five fish off Beat 8. A French group had two fish off Beat 5. Donal Houlihan had two fish off Beat 4. Jason Chung, Limerick had a 9 lb salmon and two grilse off Beat 8. John Ryan from Nenagh had five fish off Beat 5 during the week. Tim Harty, Pallas had three fish on Beat 3. Only 15 fish were officially reported for the week ending 8th July. A French angler and guest of Richard Keyes, Millbank Angling Centre, had a fresh run salmon of 10 lb off Beat 7 and he followed up with a grilse 4.5 lb. Another French angler had two grilse off Beat 5. Nick Nickelson had a fish of 10 lb off Beat 8. Fishing has tapered off significantly as the peak run is now over. On the Mulcair River, very little action was reported for the week. I have no report for the week ending 15th July but the following week saw a rise in water which has extended salmon fishing and there are quite good stocks of fish now dispersed along the Lower and Mid sections of the Shannon and tributaries. About 14 fish in total were landed for the week on Castleconnell Salmon Fishery. Martin Kiely and John Hedterington had four fish between them on Beat 8. Terry Flaherty from Co. Kerry had two fresh run salmon with sea lice during the week.
