After a slow start to the season at Castleconnell Salmon Fishery, about a dozen fish, mainly grilse, were reported from the fishery. Matt Reilly and friend had over the week three grilse on Beat Four. Pat Roche had two fish off Beat Eight. John Phelan had a 6 lb grilse off Beat Six. Mr Filquerira in a Spanish party had a grilse on Sunday off Beat Seven. John Hetherington had a 6 lb fish off Beat Eight. Mr Terry Evans had a 6-pounder off Beat Six. Mike Brown two grilse off Beat Eight and Eamon Joyce had a 9-pounder off Beat Three. In the week ending 17th June, the grilse had arrived and the run of fish were now starting to peak on the Lower Shannon. It was a good week on the Fishery. A total of 55 fish were returned from the beats. Four Spanish students staying at O’Briensbridge, Gesus Filgueira, his brother and sister, and father from Pontevealra landed 14 salmon on fly and worms for the week. Another Spanish party, Carlos Martinez and anglers from Kingfisher Reisen had a few fish. Nick Nickelson and other local anglers also had a few fish, many on fly. Farther upriver, fish are starting to appear at Meelick near Banagher and a few fresh run fish were caught in recent days.
