The first World-wide Trout Open Fly-Fishing Competition was held in Mount Juliet, Thomastown, on the River Nore on the 25th/26th September. This was sponsored by Cortland and a strict catch and release policy was adhered to. The fishing took place on Mount Juliet waters/Kings River and on a stretch of the Nore controlled by the Thomastown Anglers and Mr. Joe Teasdale, a local farmer and Chairman of the club. Water levels however, rose on Friday night and on Saturday morning, there was a good flood in the river. Despite this, the competition took place with anglers from the U.S.A., Canada, Austria, France, Poland, Netherlands, Ireland, Russia and England.
Winners on Saturday were:
1st: Stanislaw Guzdek, Poland, 304.2 cms. 2nd: Jeroen Van Dimen, Netherlands, 191.5 cms 3rd: Artur Rucci, Poland, 183.5 cms;
Sunday's competition was between the ten best from Saturday and members of the media including members of the six T.V. stations who filmed both days.
The winners were:-
1st: Arthur Raclawski, Poland, 4 trout 2nd: Joseph Lach, Poland, 2 trout (79 cms) 3rd: Thurery Cloux, France, 2 trout (75 cms)
This will be an annual event at Mount Juliet with anglers through the world including Ireland taking part in qualifying rounds and the winners fishing the World Open Finals in Ireland.
24 salmon were reported taken in the five days 14th - 18th September at Brownsbarn. Reports have it that the river got a good run of fish in the also fortnight of the season. There were a lot of anglers on the water and the signs are that they were well satisfied with how the river fished.
