Lough Ree - Friday, 11 May 2001
Lough Ree was in the angling news again this month with two fine specimen trout recorded. John Lane from Longford caught a magnificent fish of 13 lb 8oz while trolling a Rapala on last Sunday, April 8th. On the same day, Athlone anglers Donal Flanagan, accompanied by Des Powell, had a bit of excitement also when a second specimen was successfully landed to tip the scales at 13 lb 7.5oz. Despite the adverse weather conditions Steve Turner managed a nice 3 lb fish on fly. Best flies reported were Silver Dabbler, Golden Olives and Claret Dabblers. In the week ending 15th April, wet-fly fishing remained good again on Lough Ree and although no specimens were reported to the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board, it produced some excellent fish. Declan Brehany, Eamon Quinn, Cormac Doyle and Shay Walsh all from Athlone, had fish from 2.25 lb to 3.5 lb using flies such as Golden Olive Dabbler, Green Peter and Silver Dabbler. Anglers reported a lot of fish moving in the shallows and a lot of fish rising to the fly.
