Leinster - Lough Ree - Latest Reports

Lough Ree - Monday, 9 April 2001

After the Foot & Mouth Disease shutdown ended, despite the cold weather conditions, Athlone anglers were having a bumper Duckfly season on Lough Ree. This was a most unusual phenomenon for this lake, as it is nearly unheard of that trout are caught on wetflies. Fish were feeding in the shallows on shrimp, snails and water louse. Best flies, Silver Dabblers, Golden Olive Bumbles and Bibio. Five trout were returned weighing up to close on 5 lb each. Steve Turner had a fish of 4 lb 10 oz. Philip Cunningham had two fish at 4 lb. Two other local anglers, S. Walsh and T. Mulvehill had a fish each at 3.25 lb and 3.5 lb respectively.
