Connacht - Lough Mask - Latest Reports

Lough Mask - Monday, 6 August 2007

WRFB Angling Report 5th June 2007;

Weather conditions were mixed over the week, with mild broken weather giving way to bright sunshine and higher temperatures. Olives, sedges and a few mayfly were hatching, and 65 anglers reported 124 trout in 106 rod-days. Mayfly and sedge patterns were successful, with some fish taken on Octopus and buzzer also. Sedge hatches are starting to appear so evening fishing should improve in the coming weeks.
Fish of the week was landed by 80-year-old Drummond Nelson from Sligo, who caught a fine 10.22lbs trout while trolling. Mary McCabe, who was even older (but we won’t disclose a lady’s age) had 10 fish for 6 days to 3lbs. Jonathan Simmons from England had 13 fish for 4 days, and David McGinley from Donegal had 5 fish over 2 days. Ronan Cusack from Cushlough had 6 fish in days to 2lbs, all released, and Joe Conroy had 4 fish for his day’s fishing. Tom Kelly from Oughterard had a fine 6lbs trout on buzzer.

Staff of the Western Regional Fisheries Board held a fishing competition on Friday to mark the retirement of Assistant Inspector Billy Murphy after 45 years service. Billy showed everyone how to do it in style as he landed 2 nice trout before anyone else was off the mark. Billy has been working on Lough Mask since 1973, and has been responsible for much of the habitat development work on spawning streams during that time. The number of staff who turned up to wish him well is a testament to the esteem in which he is held by his colleagues and all the anglers who fish the lake. We wish him all the best for his retirement, and whoever takes over will have big shoes to fill.

The new map and angling guide to Lough Mask is now available from the Western Regional Fisheries Board. The map has detailed information on flies, hatches, drifts and fishing areas, and will be a very useful guide for anyone new to the lake, indeed to anyone who fishes the lake. The map costs 4 euros plus postage, and can be ordered from the board at the following address: Weir Lodge, Earl’s Island, Galway, or email info@wrfb.ie
