Photo: This week’s catch of the week comes from Lough Ree, Co. Westmeath. Regular English visitor, Bill Holmes from Derbyshire has landed his third catch of the week in the past year and half. He caught and released a fine Brown Trout of 7lbs. 10 oz while fishing with angling guide Mark O’Regan from Trim. Bill’s fish was taken on a may fly emerger. Bill is our first treble winner of the Catch of the week this year. Earlier he caught another fine Trout on Lough Ree and a fine Pike in Lough Gowna to win catch of the week awards. Source CFB
MAYFLY FISHING SEASON WINDING DOWN FAST AT TIME OF WRITING
The Mayfly season is just about over on Lough Ree. Fishing over the past week has been rather patchy mainly due to the unsuitable weather. However, some anglers did well when conditions were favourable. The mayfly season is now over on Lough Derg and on reflection it was a mixed year, good early on during the fine spell in April but spoiled by poor fishing conditions once the weather broke down in early May. Some spent gnat fishing is expected for a few more days on Ree- let's hope the weather obliges. The first flood in a number of months on the River Feale attracted salmon anglers out over the weekend. A few fish were caught, best reported fish was 11 lbs.
