Lough Gill - Monday, 1 January 2001
There were 20 boats out on the 1st of January fishing on Lough Gill with anglers hoping to land the first salmon of the season. During the day, three salmon were hooked and lost by anglers trolling spoon baits. On the 2nd January, there were five boats out and at 1.00 p.m., Andrew Gordon, a member of the Sligo Anglers had two takes on his two spinning rods which he was trolling at the back of the boat. Fishing near Church Island, Andrew stuck the fish on the first rod but lost the fish but lifting the second rod, he struck into a fine spring salmon on a mackerel spoon bait. After a long battle, Andrew landed his first salmon of the year in the North West region. The fish was weighed at 12.5 lb and was tagged under the new tagging regulations and was the second salmon of the new season landed in Ireland.
The fishing was slow for the next ten days but in the week ending 17th January, a few fish were reported on the troll. Christy Gordon, Sligo, had two salmon weighing 12 lb and 7.75 lb. Brian Conneely, Sligo, caught a salmon weighing 11 lb. Michael McLoughlin, Sligo, took the first salmon of the season on the Garravogue River weighing 10 lb just above the lodge. P.O’R.
