Galway Weir Salmon fishing Report
16th April 2008
While the wet winter took its toll on early season opportunities for salmon angling, spring has really arrived now at the Galway Weir. Indeed, its been many years since so many fish have been seen in the river so early in the season. Fish have been caught on fly, spinner and shrimp this week, and with 4 gates open fish are moving through all the time.
There were 13 fish landed for the week, with another 7 or 8 hooked and lost. Among the successful anglers were Sean O’Toole from Galway and Michael Rogers from Dublin, who landed fish of 11 and 9lbs while spinning. John Hetherington from Laois took a 10.5lbs springer on shrimp, and Galway anglers Fintan Murphy and Bert Lynch both had good fish of 10 and 12lbs, also on shrimp. Davey Hoy and Jim Davidson, both from Northern Ireland, landed fish of 8 and 11lbs, with Davey taking the first fish of the season on fly. He managed a second fish on fly the following day, a beautiful 12-pounder. Other anglers to score were Tom Coogan and Gordon Sweetnam from Carrickmacross, and John McCarthy Sr. from Dublin.
Water conditions are great for the time of year, and with lots of fresh fish showing in the river, prospects for a good spring season are excellent.
