Duckfly still coming on Corrib

Two days fishing in the cold, but trout still feeding

I spent two days on Corrib, Thursday 10th and Friday 11th April, fishing around Dooras, Cornamona. Despite the cold conditions and snow on the mountains, trout were still feeding in sheltered bays and in the lee of islands. I fished with friend and local angler Larry McCarthy on the first day and we had nine fish, all returned. I caught mine on light buzzers, just under the surface while Larry gave me a lesson in dry fly fishing, catching his on a duster. Identifying the difference in rise types and between fish feeding on nymphs or adults is all key to your return. And of course patience - willing to wait for a targeted fish to come within range before casting and then landing the fly on the fish's path... A very satisfying day as we had to look hard for feeding fish and think hard before catching them in what were far from ideal conditions for nymph and dry fly fishing - freezing cold and squally winds. I fished the second day with my Dad, feeling full of confidence from the day before and slightly more favourable conditions with a more consistent wind. We rose just as many fish but caught only 5, keeping two fish, one of 2 lbs and the other of 3 lbs. All fish were caught on light buzzers. Overall the fishing was hard but good. We were hoping for a few late evening rises but the conditions were against us. A few warm days will see the last day of the main duckfly hatches and reports are already coming in from the lower lake of a few fish being taken on olives.
